Cubism is an art form that was started in the early twentieth century by two popular artists. The two creators of this unique movement are Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso as well as French artist, George Braque. Cubism was influenced by the French artist, Paul Cezzane. There are two major types of this art form, which are synthetic cubism as well as analytical cubism. Synthetic cubism lasted from 1913-1920, while analytical cubism lasted from about 1907 - 1912. Cubism became a huge art movement in Europe. In its early stages, many would criticize the form because of its angular, cubic style. This art was in response to realism in impressionism. Cubist artists focus on the shape and form in their art rather than the detail.
Pablo Picasso Les Desmoiselles d'Avignon 1907 Les Desmoiselles d'Avignon is a painting that displays nude women as prostitutes. In this work of art, a few of the women are clearly seen wearing African masks. The color is used to show that there were just not white people in his city but as well as women of color. He was inspired by African art and this piece is a form of abstract art. This piece was very intriguing to me at first. As an advanced 3-D artist, I spent time on trying to figure out his process and meaning behind this piece. I found it to be very captivating because of the shapes he used and the way he depicted the women. The emotions that I received from this piece were a mixture of discomfort and fear.
Paul Cezzane The Basket of Apples 1893 The art piece, The Basket of Apples is a piece that portrays a collection of apples accompanied by some wine and cloth. The colors shows dynamism of the piece and shows its realistic art form. The piece is quite a classic and the feelings it gives to me is a mix of sadness and happiness.
Georges Braque Woman with a Guitar 1913 This piece is a depiction of a woman holding/playing a guitar in abstract form with intersecting shapes to depict harmony in his piece. This piece is believed to be a symbol for merriment. In some perspectives, it seems that the women is just looking down upon her guitar. This piece gave me a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. I love this piece because of the shading and the colors. The dark colors really make the brown guitar in the middle pop out to the eye of the viewer.
Juan Gris Glass of Beer and Playing Cards 1913 This art piece is one of Juan Gris's more simple pieces. It is his cubist and abstract perspective on playing cards and a glass of beer. In the piece, emotions of happiness and laziness are derived due to the simple colors used and the simple manner of which the painting was made. I like the piece a lot due to its aesthetics and the colors used.
Pablo Picasso Seated Woman 1937 The piece "Seated Woman" is quite a simple piece with so many opinions. The piece clearly depicts a female in a stationary position as she is seated upon a chair. The vibrant colors bring an uplifting state to the person viewing the piece. The colors on her make her dress seem to be in the form of a costume. I enjoy the piece due to the colors used and the interesting pose she is in, as well as the shape of the eyes.
Cubism, like many art forms, is a one way to show a person's emotions, perspective, and story. Cubist artists focus on the shape of their art, which adds definition and meaning to the piece. This movement and its pieces makes me feel alive and emotional and appreciative of all the artists that contributed. The art reminds me of my father because he was full of color and I miss so much, as I miss this time period in art.
